Clonezilla good alternative for Symantec Ghost

 

If you clone drives for desktops or serves you are probably familiar with Symantec Ghost program or TrueImage.  If you are on a budget Clonezilla is a good alternative to Symantec Ghost. It is free and open source software that allows you to copy an entire computer hard drive from one computer to another hard drive creating an exact copy of the computer.

This is useful to just have a backup of your computer or if you are running a business and need to deploy many identical standard desktops for your employees. Two versions are available a Live version which is booted from a CD-ROM and suitable for a single PC and a Server edition that can deploy a computer image to up to 4 PCs. Alos, multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for multiple simultaneous clones. You can also remotely use it to save or restore computers using PXE and Wake-on-LAN

The following File systems are supported:

  • ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs, btrfs, f2fs and nilfs2 of GNU/Linux
  • FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS of MS Windows
  • HFS+ of Mac OS
  • UFS of FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD
  • minix of Minix, and (6) VMFS3 and VMFS5 of VMWare ESX.

This free alternative to Symantec Ghost is perfect for small businesses that are short on time and resources.
